The Day I Met Sir Ian McKellen . . . and Magneto Signed My Shakespeare!
Hei hei, y’all! I’m sorry it’s been so long. I’ve been deep in the writing cave, getting the first three books of The Ære Saga all ready to share with you. I can’t believe Perfekt Order comes out in just three weeks! Eek!
A few weeks ago, I ducked out of the cave for a bit to meet one of my heroes. Who was it? I’ll give you a hint: he’s pretty much the sum of all of my favorite things.
If there’s one thing you probably know about me by now, it’s that I am a massive nerd. I love Shakespeare with the passion of a thousand Fabio novels (they still make those, right?), I once slept on the concrete floor of a convention center to be at the first viewing of the first Star Wars: Episode VII trailer, and I never miss an episode of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Never. Marvel’s Kevin Feige once sat across the aisle from me at a D23 event, and he smiled at me—he smiled at me!!!!—and it was all I could to not to jump across the twenty-feet separating us, and throw my arms around him, and thank him for all he has given us. (And also offer to write anything, ever, no matter how seemingly small, that he ever needs, including his grocery list. Because, reasons. #MarvelLove)
Needless to say, when I was blessed with the incredibly awesome opportunity to meet Magneto/Gandalf/Royal Shakespeare Company alum, Sir Ian McKellen, I closed my laptop, left The Ære Saga crew to their own devices, and grabbed my most treasured book—my copy of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare. I was beyond grateful that Magneto/Gandalf himself took pity on my trembling, geeking-out self, and kindly signed my book without commenting on what a blubbering mess I was. And I was equally grateful that I held it together enough to actually make it to my car before I broke down in ugly tears. (Yes, ugly tears.) I was just so grateful—Ian McKellen’s performances played a huge part in fostering my understanding of, and therefore love for, Shakespeare . . . and I can’t imagine how different my life would have been if I hadn’t opened my heart to Billy Shakes!
Sir Ian McKellan signing my Complete Works was this fangirl’s dream come true. And if Kevin Feige ever smiles at me again, I’ll totally be brave and ask for his autograph too . . . I’ll just tell him Magneto sent me. :)
